WHO WE ARE
The Auckland Coastal Defences Historical Trust, ACDHT, was founded in 2009 to restore and enhance the historical aspects of military sites developed initially in the 1880's in the Devonport area, to protect and defend the entrance to Auckland harbour.
It has been estimated North Head/Maungauika has over 500,000 visitors each year who enjoy its beautiful views and historical sites. The Trust has designed tours with guides who will enhance the visitor experience, and any koha or donations are used to restore the historic aspects of the sites and maintain them.
There are a number of underground installations with historical interest and features that are not currently open to the public that need to be maintained to high standards as are of interest to the visitors. These include the Summit Battery and Search Light positions. In addition most of the currently accessible areas can be greatly improved for visitors and tourists without degradation of the amenity values.
The Trust provides guided tours and unique experiences developed around the forts and their history. The guides are volunteers and donations/koha are used to restore and improve the sites, preserving and enhancing the sites historical values.
Tours can be arranged for a variety of groups including organised tours for groups of family, educational/school groups, recreation or social, corporate outings, or groups or from cruise ships. Times and content can be adapted to suit your purpose and schedule.
The Trust accepts any charitable donation or koha to enable it to continue its work as described above. We also regularly seek volunteers to assist with tours, or with the administration of the Trust. If you wish to contribute, please contact us.
